Horus Heresy Iron Warriors Iron Circle & Warsmith

Well I've been busy painting more 30k Iron Warriors for a trip to Warhammer World in October, so i thought i'd share some of my recent progress on an army that i'm absolutely loving painting at the moment.

The Iron Circle Battle Automata is the first such model. As the test model for the unit i'm pretty happy with it. Overall the model is pretty easy to put together, but unlike the contemptor doesn't offer much in the way of flexibility in how the hips and legs are positioned, unless you start cutting and sculpting.

I've been sticking to my tried and tested method of painting my Iron Warriors, it works well for me, as an army I think it looks great, but individually they are probably not going to win any prizes.  But still i'm pretty proud of them and i'll be sure to share an army shot in the next few weeks.

Next up is my Warsmith, or Kyr Vhalen stand in until Forgeworld produce a model for it. It's a simple kit bash between a Legion Praetor, Techmarine and volkite charger from the Forgeworld upgrade set.  The rest went on a unit of terminators that i'll be sharing with you next week...

Again i've kept the paint scheme pretty simple, weathered him up, as I don't believe Iron Warriors should ever be clean or have enough time to clean their armour, and gave him a suitably thematic base.  Pretty simple stuff but hopefully effective.

I've got to get 2000 points completed for October 9th when we take a trip over to Warhammer World for a day of Horus Heresy gaming on a feature table. I'm moving towards that steadily and most importantly really enjoying doing it. Considering this time last year i said i never wanted to paint another space marine, i find this quite remarkable!

If any of you are about at Warhammer World on the 9th then come over and say hello, and maybe we can get a game in.

Cheers,

Xach.

    1. Thanks, I really enjoyed painting them, and at no point did it feel like a chore, but I think that's testament to quality of the models.

    1. Cheers Gregg, when I started this army I hadn't really done much in the way of metallics beyond weapons so it was a bit of a learning curve and some experimentation on trying to get that worn look I wanted to achieve.

  3. Fantastic work Xach! I love the brutality of him and the great mix of worn iron, weathered black, and subtle chevrons. The Warsmith looks amazing as well with a suitably cold expression on his face.

    1. Thanks :) I really like the effect of keeping a simple small colour palette and it really does lend itself well to this legion. I'm glad you think I've achieved the cold brutality of the legion, it's what I was trying to capture, but it's certainly a very different approach to the bright grey/blue of my 40k Space Wolves. It was really difficult to shake that habit of painting 'clean'.

  5. It's such an awesome model, and your paint job is great. A whole unit of these is going to look amazing.

    1. Thanks for the encouragement, I've started the second Iron Circle this evening and think I'll run just the two for a while to see how they work before I invest in the unit further. I really just want to run them with Perturabo, which I think will look very imposing on the tabletop :)

  6. Wow. Looking good, man. You've even managed to make a pretty much stock Praetor look the part of a dour Iron Warrior. There's something extremely creepy about his empty eye socket.

    1. Yeah I love the missing eye, it adds a nice focal point to a paint job that is very much the standard style across the army. But you're right it it's creepy...

  7. Great job on the warsmith/Kyr Vhalen. Iron circle look great too! My only criticism and it is very small, is the imperial fist helmet, Vhalen was a loyalist and I think it would be more fitting to have a alpha legion helmet? Still well done on your work.

    1. Hi Ian, thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. I did struggle with the decision to put a yellow helmet on the base. But I did it simply to keep the yellow spot colour going through to the base on this model. I've also done it on a few other models as well. I am also working on Perturabo now as well, so wanted the option to use the model as a stock warsmith so I can jump between loyalist and traitor forces. So mostly the helmet is for the spot colour. I'll post up some terminators later today with my other praetor that has yellow on the base.
