Space wolves land speeder squadron

Vlka Fenryka!

So my prep for blog wars 9 has begun with these two models.

I have had them sitting in a corner of my painting desk for an age now half complete, but I need them in a trial list I have cooked up for bw9. Reluctantly out came the washes and paint brushes and I began dusting them off and slapping some paint on. It has been difficult to tear myself away from my carnival stuff, as I am not feeling the love for my hairy brothers at the moment. However they are my only tabletop ready army and I need to add more units to make them more playable in the current edition.

With that in mind I needed some mobile scoring and anti tank units, and that's where these two come in. The plan is for them to zip down the flanks popping off shots at enemy armour, and scoring those far flung objectives, while my enemy focuses on more threatening units (I hope :D )

They followed my usual simple scheme of a black was over metal basecoat, followed by two washes of agrax for the gritty dirty look I like on my wolves. I did not enjoy all the flat areas on these (and tbh vehicles in general fill me with a certain amount of horror) but broke them up with transfers that came with the sw kits, and I think this helps to break the monotony somewhat.

I have two drop pods half way painted, that I also need tomget done, so alas for my hobby mojo I will chain myself to my desk and get those two monstrocities painted as well soon (seriously the drop pod has to be the worst model to assemble and paint that I have had the misfortune to come across. I tried to batch paint four of them for the last blog wars, and I could not paint a thing for weeks afterwards. Oh and I still did not get them finished either)

On a more cheerier note my DE carnival venom is nearly complete, just the crew to finish painting, and I am quite excited to get it up here and show you all. Anyways enough rambling from me :)

NafNaf out!

  1. Wow, I never would have though of using metallic paint with a wash to make pre-shaded grey. It's so simple and yet so effective. It's like creating an NMM effect with TMM paints!

    1. Thanks Zab. The first unit I ever painted for these I used grey with lots of line highlights but it nearly killed me doing it, so I wanted to get a scheme that was simple and quick to paint, that looked pretty good and enabled me to get a force onto the tabletop fully painted.

I really like the gritty feel the washes give to the metal, and it has the added advantage of doing all the highlighting for me, for no extra effort :)

    2. Line highlighting...I hate it. I hate hate hate it. It is so monotonous. (while doing highlight after highlight) I agree with Zab. The wash really added interest in a simple and effective manner!

    3. Thanks :)

I don't mind line highlighting as long as it is something interesting like cloth or only small areas. Space marine armour and vehicles are a real killer!

  2. Wow what a sudden shift. I didn't think this was your blog for a second nafnaf! I really like the faces on these guys..."What did we get ourselves into"

    1. I know tell me about it! I really had to force myself to get these painted, as I was on a roll with the carnival stuff (and enjoy it much more tbh, as it pushes me as a modeller and painter, and creating a theme is a real blast)

I do like this army, and am happy with the paint job, but it just hurts sometimes to switch. I really have to get this SW stuff done though, as I want to have fun playing on te tabletop too, and the current models I have don't yet make an effective and balanced list. Once I get back into them I will enjoy it again, just a different pace tis all.

I do love painting the faces. It is my fave part in the scheme, and is one of the reasons why most of my SW models all have bare faces :)

  3. looking good mate, i can vouch for the effectiveness of multi melta land speeders too, if not their survivability - i tend to take a typhoon launcher on them as well just for the extra couple of shots!

    don't fancy facing them though!

    1. Cheers Nick :)

Glad they are effective at blowing stuff up. Nothing worse than painting something and it turns out pants on the battlefield. I do have a typhoon speeder in bits but never added it to any lists I used. If these two are any good i might get it done as well.

You never know, maybe we get drawn against each other at bw9 ;)

  4. Unfortunately the Grey Knights hit them first turn and they ended up between a knight and a hard place in the second battle. Better luck next time!

    1. Haha yeah they were less than stellar in both the battles. Not what you want from freshly painted minis :D

Great games though. Your victory was thoroughly deserved, and I thought your list overall worked really well

  5. Swapped out a purifier unit for the strike for blog wars, just for scoring. One cleansing flame probably enough :). Apart from that think my list going to stay pretty much as it is, it's pretty rounded, not sure how it will fare against tournament Necrons but will find out next week.

    1. Good call. Think that obj secured will really help. Good luck against those peaky Necrons. They are as hard as nails!

    2. Don't forget they'll only be objective secured if you use a standard force org instead of the nemesis strike force org. No first turn deep strike is a big price to pay for a single ob sec troop unit.
