Iron Priest On Thunderwolf Painted!

Managed to slap some paint on this badboy in between my furious week of scraping and gluing. I wanted to get something painted as I had quite a mound of assembled models piling up at the side of my desk.
He was pretty straight forward to paint. Mainly washes and drybrushing to achieve the desired effects. Unfortunately it was during the painting stage I realised what a horrible cast this model was. I tried to remove as many mould lines and defects as I could before painting, but it seems that applying the paint seemed to highlight even more. Oh well too late by then. Fortunately the washes hide most of it from view :) .

Overall the paint job looks pretty good, although I could have added more highlights to the power cables to make them pop a bit more. They look a little too flat even with washes applied. I am not too happy with the white skulls, and have changed it for the next one I am in the process of painting to a bone colour. My favourite part is definitely the face of the iron priest. I am really happy with the blending on the flesh, and feel it adds a nice focal point to what could otherwise be a slightly plain model. Also I absolutely love painting fur, so the thunderwolf was a real joy to paint. What do you all think of the finished model? Does the new background take away from the paint job or does it help? Trying a new way of photographing, so you comments and feedback would be much appreciated :)
NafNaf out!

  1. Very nice work, although I have to say that he should have two hands on the wolf at all times. Safety first! Unless of course that model comes with the hands free options like Bluetooth and whatnot...

    1. Cheers Zab :) I like to think he is fused to the saddle, or has incredible balancing skills (or the power of bluetooth is keeping him there :) ). He might have a few problems with low hanging branches though :D

  2. I always hate how you will find the most mould lines, after you are in the middle of painting the model. I will spend forever looking for them, put a few coats on...oh boy, look at all the lines! LINES EVERYWHERE!

Model looks awesome! Some suggestions (for future). Some additional color breaks, or metallic changes in the larger sections would help add some interest. In some angles, it's a lot of grey (when the base is also similar in grey tone).

My fav color on this model is the wolves fur, and that brilliant purple staff. Go fearless with color, you do it great!

Other suggestion is getting some snow on the model perhaps. (maybe a sprinkling here and there). He's a bit dynamic to have it, but might work on another model and help tie in the scene. Blood effects are great btw!

    1. Ach yeah it was really painful to discover them. Some I had to leave as I would have completely ruined salot of the paint job I had already achieved.

Thanks for the pointers :). I did try for a bit more colour on the cables but I agree with you I could have added alot more. I will have to decide where I can add it without making the scheme stand out too much from the rest of my force.....maybe more ice weapons (like the claws I did on my murderfang) or bits like that could work.

I am really pleased with my blood technique, so glad you like it too :). Thanks :)

  3. I'm gonna have to disagree with Greg on this one, the purple staff looked a little out of place to me, I'd have preferred it to be dark red or green (my preference though, no criticism implied). The only other thing I thought when I looked was trying to get some writing on the purity seals - in my experience they look much better if you add a few delicate black lines/symbols to it.

Those a two minor points though, overall the model is really well done and the blood effect is really good, is it tamiya

    1. Concur as it a single element, it stands out. I wanted to encourage his use of colors, so maybe he'd repeat that purple else wear in the model, and cause the eye to travel about a bit.

I need to write on my purity seals. Do you have a technique you like nick?

    2. No worries Nick, no offense taken :). Glad to hear your opinion on it. Sometimes what I paint is not to everyones taste or you pick something up I may have missed. I chose the purple as it is a colour I have used alot through my army for the hafts of weapons on characters ect. My arjac and the dread with axe have them so I wanted to keep the theme (and I like purple :) ). I will definitely go back and add the squiggles on the purity seals. You are right, they will add alot to the model :)

I use the Tamiys clear red for the blood, just mix the first layer with a little black paint and UHU glue, before going over with the pure red once it is dry.

    3. I thought it looked familiar, though I use black wash and let it dry a bit first so it goes lumpy.

As for the seals, just use a really fine brush and some thinned black paint, with some squiggly lines, nothing more to it I'm afraid.

    4. Cool, I will give it a try. I might re-post a pic with some changes after all the feedback on him :)

  4. He came out fantastic! The gore is a nice touch and the wild fur is awesome. I agree with Greg's point that there is a lot of grey. One thing I did with my Iron Warriors is just paint some areas black, it adds visual interest without clashing with anything. One area that could work is the outer top sections of the backpack.

    1. Cheers Joe :). Thanks for the feedback. I will do as you suggest and add a little black to the backpack for more variation. Thanks for the tip :)
