Hobby - Feb Review and March goals

Well howdy hey folks. Its that time of the month where I whip myself with birch branches whilst vigorously and loudly repenting for my failed vows from the preceding month.

You may have guessed by now that I have not completed any of the plans I set out at the beginning of Feb. There are a few reasons for that, but the main one was a major distraction. Luckily it was hobby related :)

I had vowed to complete a 10 man tactical squad for my 30k word bearers force. Well I massively expanded upon that. I had a plan to mix a few converted mk5 marine legs into the squad to maximise the amount of space marines I could get out of B&C and save some cash. I started to convert the 5 legs I needed for the squad......and continued.....and continued......until I had converted 15 legs, 18 torsos, made moulds for 10 heads and tried a few disastrous attempts to cast them (still lots to learn here). Anyhow I plan to batch prime and undercoat all 30 marines, and then work on them in tens. My hobby vow is to have all 30 base coated by the end of march. Here is my progress so far.

Enough legs for ya?

I do have a question for you folks. How would you mount backpacks and shoulder pads so they can be batch painted seperate to the marines? I have found a way for the bolters, but would like your advice on the other two

Infinity. I pledged to complete Kornak Gazarot for my Feb vow. Well, I started but he still lies incomplete. I finished the gun and have washed and basecoated hos trousers. This leaves the blue and orange armour plates, loin cloth, face and hair, with a few other bits and bobs to get him finished. I could prob get him finished in a few days but my desk is/has been such a mess with all the 30k stuff going on I have not been able to progress much further. Once those are out the way I really do plan to crack on with him.

La Danse Macabre. Pretty much the same story here, progress stymied by the messy desk. I did get the red stages complete, from base, wash to highlight, the bases part painted (but nowhere near completion) and the metals blocked in and washed. Still tons to do with these guys, but I can see the end already which is good. Most of the boring blocking in stages are nearly done so it will the fun bits like choosing the colours and patterns next.

Scourge Vampires. Nothing to report here. Magnetised their flying stands and the bodies, but that is about it. Not even worth a photo. Hopefully get onto these after the bunch of stuff above, but unlikely. Not pressuring myself for these. Got plenty to do this month

So there you go folks. My March vow is basically to finish my Feb vow :)

  1. Go with the flow, its not like you haven't been busy - so no flagellation required.

    1. You can do only what you can do ;)
I like to have a plan for myself as my time is limited nowadays, so working towards set goals really helps me focus, even if they can be unachievable sometimes

  2. Have you ever thought about putting less pressure on yourself? I mean all I've managed to get done in the last month is Horus and a couple of 30K termi conversions. Perhaps your blistering pace is making things tricky.

That said I am loving the infinity model.

    1. I definitely think I over committed myself to complete too many things, but having a goal each month has really pushed my hobby along, as I was not getting much done once my boy was born and my hobby time vastly reduced as a result. I don't really feel much pressure to complete, just nice to have a target to work towards :)

  3. I'm with you mate, having goals to work to helps, but I think it's also important to be able to revise those goals as you go - for example my marine painting quantity is going to drop massively now as I've got nowhere near as much part finished stuff to do now I've sold off a lot of the Iron Fists stuff.

In terms of mounting the backpacks for batch painting, I'd pin them to a sprue on a long piece of wire (straightened paperclips are perfect for this). Just drill a small hole into the mounting hole on the backpack itself, or any part where it's going to be glued to the model eventually so you can't see it.

    1. Yeah def agree, however some of the things I have planned to paint do have a time limit on them. My DE mainly. I want to take them both to your event and to double trouble. I am not sure I can do enough to bring a fully painted army to double trouble, but I want to get as much done as poss, and Double Trouble I need just a few more bits before I have a 850pt army fully done :)

Thanks for the tip. I think pinning them is the way forward

    3. Don't rush them! Better to see them done properly than quickly!

  4. Looking good man - can't wait to see more of the Word Bearers, and Kornak is looking ace! Ran him in a game a few weeks back and he was a beast, tore through the pitiful hu-mons like a chainsaw!

    1. Thanks dude :)

I can't wait to get some paint on them to see how they will look.

Yeah Kornak is nails! I think not having to worry about him being killed and losing your lieutenant means he can be used much more aggressively and nearly always shines for me. Just his regular order through his leadership lv1 is invaluable

  5. Hobby progress is progress, even if it's not what you had set out to do. I just don't give myself goals because I know damn well I won't manage it. As long as I'm working on something, it's all that matters.

    1. Oh yeah I don't feel bad for getting sidetracked :) I made good progress which I am pleased with. Just need to carry one with my goals so I can love onto something else. I am determined to get my DE done (a core at least) so I can start gaming with them.

Everyone approaches the hobby different. As long as it works for you then it is all good :)

  6. it's not a race, it's a hobby to do in your leisure time at a leisurely pace :) As long as you are having fun that is all that matters.

    1. Oh yes definately. I do like to work to a goal if I can, just adds a little structure to my hobby. Don't worry I dont really beat myself with a birch branch when I do not complete what I set out to :D
