Harlequin Solitaire

I seriously love the new harlequin plastic models that GW have recently bought out, and knew I had to have them to paint and use as conversion bits for the rest of my carnival.
The solitaire immediately took my fancy, not only for the awesome fluff, but also the new model is incredible. The pose is just so dynamic and I love the base too. The only part I did not like was the face mask as I felt it looked a little silly. The glorious thing with plasic is that you can modify it as you wish, so thats what I did :)
As usual I could not resist the urge to do a little converting. I wanted the model to fit into the theme of my carnival, so I had a rummage through my bits box and came out with a talos arm and a finecast wrack hand. These replaced both the right arm and left flattened hand and electrical wire was added for tubing to the new claw and mask. The face was shaved off to make it look more of a flat faceplate. The result is suitable creepy I think.

I struggled at first to decide on a colour scheme for him. It is so easy to just add a load of colour and pattern and end up overcomplicating the mini, which I did not want to do. In the end I decided on two core colours of blue and orange, with the punk as a third. The others were there as more complimentary/contrasting colours for the whole scheme. I only added a couple of hearts onto the back of the cloak, as the space allowed a little freehand. The whole thing works well overall I think, I just wish I had taken better pictures, as it looks a little dark And the colours are alot more vibrant to the eye (I am trying something new for the next few photographs, so hopefully things will improve). I entered it into a competition over at the Dark City forum, and although it did not do well I am still pleased with him.

NafNaf out!

    1. I Think the few small changes have really changed the feel of the model to something a little different than the original. Very leased with it :)

  2. Good small changes. You kept it simple and it paid off. This guy/gal/whatever-they-are, came out great. Nice work.

    1. Thanks Thor :)

He/she was a nice distraction project away from my wolves, and I thoroughly enjoyed, working on him/her. I have a new death jester recently assembled so I might pay some attention to that soon.

  3. It's a very good conversion - usually the simple ones tend to be the most striking i think - it's one thing building an entire models from loads of bits, but finding those one or two parts that change the tone of the model without completely changing its style is an artform that you're got nailed down.

As for the competition, I think I'd have voted for yours were Calyptra's not there (mind you, the voting for the minor places showed that it would have been a much more even contest without that one entry!)

Looking forward to seeing the others - I'm currently deciding whether or not to keep mine or post it up on ebay.

  4. Cheers Nick. I appreciate the kind words :) I agree shout the simple things sometimes being the most effective. A few part changes are all that's needed to completely transform a model or change it enough so it tells a different story.

I think Calyptras entry was stunning and thoroughly deserved the no1 spot. Your entry was also excellent.

  5. Wonderful work Nafnaf! I really like how you worked the replacement bits into the pose of the model, keeping it dynamic and full of energy and movement. It makes it a spectacular piece.

    1. Thankyou Greg :) I am pleased you like him ( I think it is a him :D ). He was a blast to convert and paint, and it was very refreshing to get back to painting the Carnival again after such a push with the Wolves (which is still ongoing at the mo, but the end is in sight)
