30K Iron Warriors March Progress

Well it feels like I blinked and March is already pretty much over, but i've managed to complete my 30K Iron Warriors target and empowered by the tunes of AC/DC achieve a little bit more...

My target was to finish the other half of my tactical squad and a contemptor, well as you can see from the picture I managed to get two contemptor dreadnoughts complete. Contemptors just paint up so easy and i managed to fit it it in, despite me only working at about half Tuttle time (that's half an hour a night for those that don't listen to the IC podcast).

I'm quite pleased with the outcome I think the tactical squad has the cold look I wanted and the dreadnoughts are suitably battle worn. I'm just waiting on some decal medium to get the tactical symbols and chapter icons in place.

The dreadnoughts are the Calth ones, i've done a bit of cutting here and there but nothing too adventurous. The first has twin Kheres Cannons while the second has a power fist and homemade chainfist, both with meltaguns built in.  I simply cut the ends of a couple of meltaguns and glued them in place of the bolters. I also added some stud work to the armour, for which I used the rivets from zinge industries, I figured nothing from Perturabo would come without some modifications.

For April i've got some Kings of War to paint for our club tournament, but i'm still targeting to get a unit of terminators finished.

I mentioned AC/DC in the intro, I seem to have been listening to them a lot while painting Iron Warriors, whatever helps I guess but it got me thinking what music other people listen to while painting particular legions/chapters/factions...

    1. Thanks for the positive comments, I'm really enjoying painting these, after a recent bout of not really enjoying painting, even though they are quite simple. It's just what I needed to get me enjoying that part of the hobby again.

    1. Cheers, I'm really pleased with them given they are the horrible calth models. But they do paint up easily and lend themselves to simple weathering techniques, there's nothing more adventurous here than a bit of sponging and washes. I've got the Forgeword Iron Warriors Contemptor to build and paint that will lead the talon. Looking forward to doing that one, but I need to earn that by getting my terminator unit painted first.

  3. I need to get myself working at even that speed. I tend to only get painting in when I am fresh and awake, so lately that means I haven't gotten much in at all.

Really liking how these are looking though, bravo.

    1. I know what you mean, I've given up only painting when I feel fresh and awake. But I do find that if I force myself do do ten minutes, I get into it, even though I really didn't feel like painting.

Health problems have really dictated my hobby time, having two very serious blood clots in the last few years means I'm limited by how much time I can just sit and paint. But I find when I do get to sit down and have a pain free painting session it's really satisfying, feels like a win!

  4. Great photo! Is that a lightbox?
Iron warriors look great. I need to pull my finger out so we can do some 30k missions.

    1. I gave up on using a lightbox, always seemed to take too long setup etc. It's actually just my Fat Mat on the kitchen table, the mat seems to reflect the light well enough to get a half decent picture.

I'm looking forward to seeing your night lords on the table, so yes, get hobbling :) and if I can help with any bits etc just let me know.

  5. They have an oily look to them. Very befitting for the Iron Warriors.

  7. Hi Max, I like to keep my painting really simple. With these I went with a base coat of leadbelcher, I then washed it very very lightly with null oil. Then I did a zenithal drybrush with ironbreaker, again very lightly, building it up where the light hits the model the most. I then painted in all the details such as golds etc following that I the did focused washes of agrax earthshade into area I wanted to look oily or where dirt would gather.

Finally it was just a case of some simple weathering, rhinox hide and ironbreaker sponged on to wear points, again built up slowly.

To age the yellow areas I mixed seraphim sepia with lahmian medium, about 1:3 then built up shading on yellow, making it darker in the seams and joins etc.

I've got an update on this project coming up, with some new models painted. So I'll be sure to get that posted soon.

It would be great to see your iron warriors, be sure to share a link.

    Cheers,

    Xach.
